Debris

Using crocheting as both technique and gesture, Julia Hung engages questions of identity in relation to place, community, and gender. Drawing on Taiwan’s oceanic context, she transforms discarded materials into organic forms that evoke marine life, fossils, and drifting, plume-like formations. Through this process of material reconfiguration, the Debris series reflects on how external forces—such as environmental pollution or cultural pressure—reshape existing conditions, considering what endures, what is relinquished, and how identity evolves.
